Stop the insanity

Stop the insanity.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results"
– Albert Einstein

This quote is a perfect description of what has been occurring in corporate innovation for the past decades.

Organizations want to innovate, they strive to grow and lead their industry to achieve new success.

They work with incubators, accelerators, growth hackers, futurists and even structure new innovation teams.....however, they don't really want to change HOW they do things and so the success of these initiatives fall short of expectations.

I've spent most of my career working in our around corporate innovation as a strategist, business designer and advisor as well as the founder of an innovation consulting and design firm.

I have fueled this insanity.

But I've also come to realize that a big part of this fault is that these programs only speak to logic and rational (achieve results, KPIs, goals) with a spark of creativity.

Not realizing that the decisions that determine the success of innovation is actually driven by emotion (fears, desires, hopes, motivations).

Whether it's a CEO deciding to cut innovation funding in fear of a recession or a department head worried about loosing their job; the deprioritization of innovation programs to double down on a traditional way of working to reach "results" is insane.

As innovation drivers, we need to put as much effort and time into addressing the mindset, emotions and thoughts of key stakeholders as we do in implementing processes, pilot projects and innovation activities for organizations.

We need to start approaching innovation with more empathy. Our rational brain can set the direction, but our hearts will be the drive.
